I attempted to read this back in college and failed miserably. This time, I paired my reading with a copy of Patrick Hastings "Guide to James Joyce's Ulysses", James Heffernan's Great Courses 24 episode lecture series, and of course a copy of the Gifford annotations. Honestly, I do not understand how anyone could tackle this book without the same or similar resources.

It is beyond impossible to give this book a rating on the simple 5 star Goodreads scale. It is awe-inspiring, frustrating, hilarious, convoluted, insane, sad, maddening, bottomless, unattainable, and ultimately genius. It is not an enjoyable task, but it is one that is very satisfying when completed.

I cannot recommend it, but if you give it a go, definitely get a guide or two (or three) to light the way.

Thank god for spark notes

I feel like I climbed Mount Everest to finish this book, and I’m equally proud of the accomplishment as if I had, but please don’t ask me what this was about because I truthfully have very little idea. The prose, the stream of consciousness, and the dialects (and multiple languages? what was that??) are beautiful but extremely frustrating, and somehow I still found the characters to be kind of flat? I found it hard to care about them, but they were wonderfully weird all the same. Idk how to feel haha

Equal parts brilliant and intensely irritating. I'll give it 3 stars, all things considered, but really it's unrateable.

Well, that was something. Everything. Nothing...

After that last section I'm gonna have to take some time off before I can even begin to process this book into a review, if I would even be capable of one after a single reading.

Sirens though.... I'm gonna go back and read that in the next day or two.
