The only way I was able to get through this piece of work was in an undergraduate course on James Joyce. The book has a lot to offer and is incredibly put together. I still think James Joyce is one of the biggest asses I've ever read, but he truly has a gift. The simultaneity throughout the book is reflective of the sometimes strange symmetry in life that we miss. Because the book basically transforms from modernism to post-modernism, the fact that it is a difficult read may be an understatement, but it is not impossible to get through and has some really beautiful moments. Like I said though, you might need a professor to actually translate those moments to you from Joyce's garbled language in order to fully appreciate them.

I can appreciate that it was quite the original and daring work at the time of writing. I can also appreciate the different perspectives and narrative techniques. I did not enjoy reading it.
Feels a little ridiculous to “rate” Ulysses, but wanted to capture that despite, for me, being an incredibly uneven reading experience, one that frequently forced me to rely on peripheral texts far more than I typically like to, one that for a couple of sections needed dramatized audio performance in order to be mentally navigable, despite all that difficulty and frequent consternation—it still, in a very one of a kind way, lived up to its loaded expectations. And yes, largely I suppose because of that difficulty, but my point is that the difficulty neither directly “made” or “broke” the work for me. Its highs were sky high, its lows had my eyes glazing over. So it goes. I am happier to have read this than I was to be reading it, but some books are like that, and well worth it nonetheless.
this book is the weirdest thing ive ever read. i understood less than half of it. what i did understand i hated.
