This is the first in the series where it has diverged strongly from the TV show. There were lots of surprises for me and lots of times when I could see that the TV people had drawn inspiration but then changed something. I’m quite interested to read the next book because I think it might have some familiar moments from the same season - I think they combined some stuff maybe? I guess I’ll find out!

Waaaay better than Voyager.

This was the first in the series I found hard to plow through. Jamie and Claire in the woods building a house is not interesting. However, I loved the introduction of Brianna and Roger as characters more central to the story. One of my favorite things about DG's writing is that she is not afraid to force her characters to make difficult choices and have bad things happen to them. It's so refreshing to have such vibrant, heart-breakingly real people to read about. I think this book will prove to be a major turning point leading into the next few novels, so I'll give it 3 stars just because I do love the story and the plot of this one certainly had it's un-put-down-able moments, just not as consistently as the first three did.

I honestly didn't really start enjoying this until the halfway point. this book is almost 1000 pages long so halfway is about 500 pgs. I liked certain parts a lot but hundreds of pages could've been cut! I'll continue to watch the show bc they abridge it perfectly but I probably won't read any more of the series....

Actually 5 but, this book-was so amazing! I was (still) on the roller coaster of Gabaldon and her awesomeness!!! Will write a review later...

I found myself rushing through the chapters about Brianna and Roger unable to really connect to their characters and story plot, even the romance felt boring and slow.
I did really enjoy the location and time line jump but it felt like it was missing something once the clans and "scotishness" was taken away.

I enjoyed this book more for the detail and general writing style than for the main plot - The way Diana writes her stories and dialogue makes you feel like you are witnessing the story rather than being informed for what happened.
