I loved it. I watched the King & Maxwell show a while back but never got around to reading the book it was based on. Figured it wouldn't be any different. Was I wrong about that. Full excitement, plenty of suspense and humorous at times. Definitely my kind of novel. If you haven't read it yet, do so now. :)
It's not my usual genre, but I loved the T.V. show and thought I'd give it a try. I liked it. The characters are pretty well done and the story wasn't the usual dry, boring drone I've seen in some books like this. A few laugh out loud moments. The next one will be on my soon to read list.
Sean King’s career as a secret service agent ended on a September day when someone exiting an elevator distracted him just enough to allow an assassin to take the life of the president. Fast forward several years to another presidential race. Michelle Maxwell is guarding an obscure third-party candidate whose popularity increases by the day. He insists on paying his respects to the widow of a newly dead acquaintance. Maxwell is convinced that the kidnapping that effectively ends her secret service career relates to the assassination that ended his.
This series got better as it grew, and the writing style of the author improved as well. There were pages of boring dialogue and not a lot of snappy action. Much of this felt contrived to me. The action centers around an abandoned hotel, a building no one uses and haven’t done so for years. Yet the owners keep the lights on and the electric fence running? No, that seems ridiculous to me.
Scott Brick’s narration is magnificent as always. He gets you through the sometimes-boring few pages.

Another great book from Baldacci. He is one of the best mystery writers around!
4.5 stars. Read this on the recommendation of my husband who loves Baldacci's work. This is a strong mystery with TONS of twists that kept me guessing - and then re-guessing - through the whole book. I enjoyed the characters a lot and would read more of these. More violent/bloody than my usual cozy mysteries, but not over the top.
Really good book except for the denouement. Up until the very end I really enjoyed it, but the last chapter with all the explanations just left me cold.
This is the first book by David Baldacci that I have read. It was pretty good. For me it was a typical action/adventure story invovlving seeming unrelated events. Kind of a fun and easy read.
What a thrill! I thought this was a great start. I can't wait to read more.
First David Baldacci book. I did like it - a pretty easy read. I really expected more from David Baldacci; less predictability and more twists and turns.
This is the start of King and Maxwell and a really good story. After they find a shared spirit of being outcast from the Secret Service, they discover there is much more that they have in common - a common enemy. During pursuit of the case, they discover things about each other and are faced with a new future.
