Split Second

David Baldacci

3.78 AVERAGE

Fun read that made me think a little but mostly just enjoy the story and the banter between the main characters.
mysterious tense

For a book with an average rating of almost four stars, I was certainly expecting a better novel than this. It's hard to believe this came from an author who has written and published other novels. In short, the dialogue is stilted and awkward, the characters are flat, the plot is uninspired, and the climax and main villain are laughable -- i.e., it reads like the first, unpublished novel from a first-year creative writing student. It was definitely a disappointing introduction to Baldacci.

I enjoyed this. I also liked the short lived television show based on these characters.

Michelle is in the Secret Service watching over a presidential candidate. When he goes missing Michelle is beside herself trying to figure out what happened to him. She seeks out former agent Sean King, who is now practicing law. When she finds him he is dealing with the discovery of a dead body in his office, being the main suspect in the crime. Michelle seeks him out to find out how he handled it when his charge was shot and killed under his watch. What they discover leads them on a crazy trail.

I am hoping the others in the series are going to be just as good.

Much better than I expected. Some parts were cliche. Maxwell is the perfect woman and King is the dark and brooding man. However the mystery was well played out and the plot twists were for the most part surprising.

Eight years ago, Sean King’s life, as he knew it, ended when he allowed himself to be distracted while protecting a Presidential candidate. Now Michelle Maxwell is in the same boat. She gave in to the demands of a candidate and let him go into another room, from which he was kidnapped. They never knew each other, but now these two Secret Service agents are linked by a split second’s failure.

It turns out they be linked by more than that. Sean comes across a dead body and Michelle starts investigating on her own. Before you know it, they are working together to try to understand what has happened.

This is a fast-paced, roller coaster of an adventure. Sean and Michelle are both intriguing characters. The book does jump between their POV’s, as well as quick visits to other characters. It is a convoluted conspiracy story so be prepared to reread the solution and say “what?”, but, getting there is a lot of fun.

I thought it was ok, a bit more of a formula than I prefer.

It was indeed a great read. My thoughts about the book are mentioned in the following blogpost

After seeing the TV commercials for the show based on these characters I had to read the first book.
I was not disappointed. I actually was left waiting for the reveal to find out who the mastermind was and I definitely was not anywhere on track for who it was. So kudos and I will be checking out the next book in the series as well.
