By far the best of the "Gideon Crew" books (although that's damning with faint praise), this is a direct sequel to THE ICE LIMIT, which came out something like 20 years ago. Don't worry, though, it's very accessible to folks that haven't read the first book, with major recaps and plot details laid out for the new reader.
As with any Preston/Child book there's a lot of techno-speak and wild ideas mixed with a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief. Still, it's a solid, suspenseful story, which borrows heavily from QUARTERMASS and THE THING, not to mention a bit of H.P. Lovecraft.
Eli Glinn and Gideon crew FINALLY head south to tackle the plotlines left dangling in THE ICE LIMIT. There's the usual cast of eccentric characters, and, of course, things get complicated. Over the course of the novel, Gideon, Eli, Garza, and the crew face a possible alien intelligence, mind-control, and a mutiny. It's a rollicking adventure, and just about as fun as it sounds. Yes, there are a few plot holes and moments where you scratch your head, but the writing is strong, and it's entertaining.

I didn't think these books could get any more ableist, but I was wrong. The whole Gideon Crew series is a cure narrative, with a jackass protagonist and some random misogyny to go with.

Loved it! A great follow-up to the original story, but you don't have to have read 'The Ice Limit' to enjoy it.

I read Ice Limit and when I found there was a part two, I jumped at it.
Ice Limit had the team of the Rolvaag bringing a mystery back to New York to be shared at a new museum designed to be the best. Designed by a very wealthy man, used to have what he wants. In the end, they are unsuccessful.
This tale begins with the determination to return to the site and take stock of the item. There are responsibilities that were neglected and now must be dealt with. A few characters from the original return to this story, with significant changes from their experience on the Rolvaag.
The adventure is just as crazy and active and exciting as the original.

Great beginning and tense middle with a long, drawn out ending. I found myself skimming pages to get to the end. That’s never good. The 3.5 is because it was such a fascinating concept. They just didn’t stick the landing.
Minor: Gore, Vomit, Medical trauma, Murder, Blood, Suicidal thoughts, and Death
The sex scene was cringe- definitely could tell who it was written by. It was lazy. Don’t write a sex scene if you don’t care to learn how to write one.carlylottsofbookz's review against another edition

This book was a sequel to The Ice Limit, which I recently read. I enjoyed the first, but realty not until the end, which is what made me want to pick up the sequel.
When I found it it was also part of the Gideon Crew series I was a little nervous because I haven't read that series (a few address in my bookshelf though). But I went with it.
And this book was nothing at all like first book. But it was a fun read that was easy to get through in a short amount of time.

I am going with 4, but I’m not sure. There are some weird issues with this book, but at least we get back to some of the batshit crazy that I loved about the early Preston and Child books.
The end though…ugh. It felt really phoned in.
