This is probably the fifth or sixth time, maybe even more, that I’ve read this novel and I still love it as much as the first. This was the turning point in the series for me, where you could see the gray lines beginning to appear in Anita’s life, and it is still probably one of the scariest books in the series. The cave scene makes my heart race. The snake stuff makes my skin crawl. Reading this series was a great idea and I can’t wait to get to the next one.

Overall enjoyable. I like a good urban fantasy series.

What I appreciate about this series is how realistic it is for a paranormal detective series. Anita isn’t all powerful and immune to everything. She’s realistic, honestly afraid most times, and barely manages to scrape by. It definitely gives me a bit of Dresden Files vibes and I appreciate that. I enjoyed that she’s coming forced to come to terms with the situations she’s found herself in with the vampires and that she’s also picked up an apprentice almost. I’m not sure what I want to see happen with her romantically but I think it’ll be interesting. This book was definitely a battle between her fear, morals, and loyalty and I’m not sure where exactly they all fell fit it will be fun to watch the aftermath.
