I really liked this book, but had rather complicated feelings about it for most of my time reading it, but ultimately I found it really wonderfully written and well-paced, just very very sad. As someone who admittedly doesn't read much literary fiction at my big age, this book reminded me that i think I find literary fiction difficult because I live in the world these characters do and wonder what their lives would be like right now in the moment I'm reading. 

The only other bone I have to pick with this book is that I really wish i could read Demon's comics. I really appreciate a book that acknowledges the power of graphic novels and comics as a medium in such a concrete way, especially in a world where comics and graphic novels are still seen as media for children. I thought that was cool and would really like to read a really good graphic novel now.

This book focuses a lot on opioid abuse and predatory practices of pharmaceutical companies distributing opioids through pill mills in Appalachia and the effects of that on the main character and the people around him. Barbara does I think a good job of showing how injection drug use and opioid addiction affect people's lives, but I think if this kind of content is not your thing or would be very triggering for you, maybe don't read this book :). Also

The writing was exquisite but the story so very sad I almost stopped reading. I’m glad I finished so I got to see the potential for hope.

This book destroyed me. It was a very long read, but moved fast and was so beautifully written and tragic. It really stuck with me, especially the parts surrounding opioid addiction. 

Demon is a great narrator, he’s almost a reliable one because he has such a low perception of himself, he never is biased. But it becomes clear throughout the book that his negative view isn’t how those he meets view him, and it was a really great read to see that conflict throughout. A great moral that the people who show up for you in your life can be the difference between success and failure.
