I'd heard recommendations of this before reading it, and loved Animal Dreams by kingsolver when I read it earlier in the year.

This just blew me away. Incredibly sad and beautifully written. Perhaps it feels like a pretentious thing to say but it also felt really important- placing that Dickensian morality tale of how systems prevent people in poverty from escaping its cycle into a modern context where it fits so well. I had to stop reading for a couple of days in the middle because it is very dark but I loved it overall

Such a lovable book, incredibly personable main character. Longer read, but very worth while

Such an amazing book. The characters are all so complex and real. The author has so many things to say, and it's done in such a brutal way. No criticisms.

Glad it had a happy ending for Demon and Angus. I would have been devastated otherwise.

I interestingly had conflicted feelings about the style of the writing - as someone who has grammar rules drilled into me in English classes, yet speaking with a southern mountain dialect. Took a bit to get used to, but it gave authenticity to Demon. I enjoyed seeing some of my favorite sayings in a novel, like "built like a brick shithouse".

Too much reality in the book, it was a heavy read for a fictional story.
