My boy Damon goes THROUGH IT. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what year it was for the first quarter of the book, it was such a stark depiction of poverty. Odysseus in coal country.

This is one sad book. But I have to say, from the moment I picked up Demon Copperhead, I couldn't put it down. This is a story of being born disadvantaged, of how that impacts your life. Demon, the main character, deals with being an orphan, homelessness, hunger, addiction; it is a depressing story. But the way this book is narrated is what had me so immersed. Demon's narration is dripping with sarcasm and the way he tells the story makes you feel so deeply every hurt he experiences. I learned a lot from this book, and despite the seriously sombre tone, I really, really liked it.
