Such an amazing book. The characters are all so complex and real. The author has so many things to say, and it's done in such a brutal way. No criticisms.

I’m slowly becoming a fan of 400-plus page historical fiction books. This is my second one this year and while the book was intimidating and long, it was worth it. The author told the story of Demon in a way that gave me a small glimpse of what it would be like to grow up in a rural area, with no money, no prospect of a good life all while being surrounded by drugs and sadness. The crux of the book is that society sets people up to fail. Systemic issues are at play here and have been for generations. These areas do exist and more resources, and education, are essential in the South and in Appalachia, specifically. But not all is lost. Books, inspirational teachers and chosen family make all the difference in towns like these. I really enjoyed Mr. Dick’s backstory, Angus and June, of course. June, Ms. Betsy, Ms. Annie and Mr. Armstrong prove good people are out there if you give them a chance to help.

This book is beautifully written. I wish I had loved the actual story more than I did.
I was convinced from about 20% of the way through to 90% of the way through that this would end in the main character’s death or it would end sadly and I was surprised it did not.
I just never felt fully invested in Demon’s story unfortunately.
