This is a wonderful book! Demon is such a richly drawn character and this is so detailed and well written. Loved it.

I loved the ending. It was really satisfying after all Demon had been through. It was typical and maybe a little far-fetched, but it's fiction. I found the first half pretty slow and put the book down for a bit. Once I got the audio book though I could marathon listen to it and definitely found the last half of the book at a better pace.

Apparently, 2025 is the year for me to read devastating novels. There are many parallels to A Little Life, given the trauma and all of the "fight or flight" moments that Demon goes through. You desperately feel for him as he attempts to have any resemblance to a normal life and childhood. The cast of characters is incredibly well crafted, and you are bound to have strong positive and negative feelings towards each character.

This would be a 5/5 novel for me, but I did not enjoy the football interlude. However, I was continuously intrigued by the premise of Demon reaching Virginia Beach. Put simply, Virginia Beach was posed as a goal that was always so close, but never attainable (*wink wink*).

Additional Notes:
  • P.S. Mr. Armstrong is the GOAT.
  • "Good people don't give up on the ones they love"

More 4.5. The first half could have been cut down and with all the traumas it’s hard to get through at times but the writing is beautiful and masterful.

My boy Damon goes THROUGH IT. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what year it was for the first quarter of the book, it was such a stark depiction of poverty. Odysseus in coal country.
