I received this from Netgalley for review. If you are a fan of Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and the writer Sarah Waters' oeuvre, you might well enjoy this book. It's a tense, psychological, slightly spooky drama, set in war time Britain. It wasn't for me. I've just read too many books like this and I'm afraid I guessed most of the twists before they were revealed, but if this kind of thing is your bag, it's a good one of the genre.

The real strength in this book, which at first glance looks like ' just another women in WWII fiction' book, is it's atmosphere. The imagery is incredible, and the fact that it's about women and taxidermy (both, in a sense, trapped) comes through very well. Perfect for lovers of Du Maurier. At times predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless.

The biggest problem was how boring it was. It's extremely slow paced and barely anything happens.
Then the main characters were rather frustrating. They were very 'woe is me' and 'oh no, am I going mad?' throughout the whole book and annoyingly passive about the strange going ons around the house.
The book is certainly atmospheric, the large house and the strangeness of living in such a large house with mostly strangers was a big part of the book and I think well done.
And I suspect that the book was intended to be like it, that it'd be more atmospheric than about investigating a mystery but it was all just very meh to me.

Why is this categorized as a fantasy?
