This was exceptional.
It was terrifying and horrific in the best ways. Brimming with suspense, and I had absolutely no idea and was shocked at the sudden twist at the end.
I feel like this book did not get enough hype and it is definitely one I do not regret!

You can not write a book over 300 pages long where nothing happens until the last 30 or so pages.
È 1939, la guerra incombe anche sulla capitale del Regno Unito e per questo Hetty, curatrice del Museo di Storia Naturale di Londra, deve prendere la collezione di animali impagliati del museo e portarla al sicuro con sé. Il luogo designato per custodire parte del museo è Lockwood Manor, un’enorme casa di proprietà della ricca famiglia Lockwood, abitata ormai solo dalla servitù e da padre e figlia, a seguito di un incidente fatale per gli altri membri della famiglia.
Lockwood padre è tutto fuorché gradevole ed ospitale, e la sua casa non pare essere il luogo adatto a conservare i preziosi animali impagliati del museo: incomprensibilmente, questi continuano a sparire senza lasciare traccia, fino a che Hetty non riuscirà a scoprire il mistero che si cela dietro le pesanti porte di Lockwood Manor.
“Gli animali di Lockwood Manor” è un romanzo con un enorme potenziale e con ottime premesse: un’autrice abile nel descrivere atmosfere gotiche ed inquietanti, un contesto storico interessante e una storia d’amore LGBT. E, per la prima metà del libro, questi ingredienti sono mescolati sapientemente, la voglia di scoprire cosa accadrà dopo è tanta.
Purtroppo, la seconda metà del romanzo cala parecchio: ci rendiamo conto che tutti i personaggi sono, alla fine dei conti, abbozzati e che non si tratta più solo di una storia lenta, che si prende il suo tempo per concentrarsi sulle atmosfere… gli avvenimenti sono davvero troppo pochi, la risoluzione del mistero deludente.
Nota di merito è però il finale dolceamaro che dosa bene drammaticità e realismo, regalandoci una conclusione abbastanza soddisfacente.
“Gli animali di Lockwood Manor” non è, nel complesso, un libro che non mi è piaciuto, e credo che Jane Healey abbia tutte le carte in regola per sfruttare la propria abilità nel descrivere atmosfere opprimenti ed inquietanti e creare un romanzo davvero meritevole.
In conclusione, è stata una lettura piacevole che non mi pento di aver fatto, ma temo sarà una storia troppo facile da dimenticare.

A mystery, a romance and a thrilling Manor of ghosts…
The Animals at Lockwood Manor addressed such a beautiful need in my soul for passion and ‘madness’. The documentation on the historic portrayal of women’s mental health struck such a fire in me *wink* and truly set anger in my heart for Lord Lockwood. The development of the relationship between Hetty and Lucy was absolutely honest with true representations of the love between two women. The haunting chill of the manor was enchanting and had me turning the pages so quickly that I couldn’t keep up. The dual perspective was daunting at first but was so incredibly rewarding. To hear Lucy’s own thoughts and troubles was enriching and added to the atmosphere of her silencing and entrapment. Healey creates this glorious prison inside Lockwood’s and displays a duality in the beauty and horror of it. The terrifying contrast of the world of taxidermies creatures and the love set aside for them in the passionate heart of Hetty. This was a new genre for me and I am absolutely enthralled by the deserving ending for the lovers, Lucy and Hetty, in their adorable Scotland cottage with their feline family.

A perfectly creepy read with an unexpected, dark twist at the end.
The book didn’t blow me away by any means, but it’s a geat atmospheric read for the fall season.
