Take a photo of a barcode or cover
- the run-on sentences were EVERYWHERE and it didn't feel like it achieved an effect, it just read like sloppy editing
- it felt very predictable
- neither of our protagonists voices felt differentiated enough
- I had the thought that I'd rather be reading the Sarah Waters version of this book, which is not going to flatter this one
back to the library it goes
slow-paced
You feel as though you're going mad with the characters. At times it is incredibly atmospheric and engaging and at times I felt myself bored.

I was disappointed that the cause of all the trouble didn't turn out to be paranormal. I really enjoyed the sense of not knowing if there were ghosts or not and the final reveal spoiled it.

I loved this suspenseful and dark gothic tale- the ghosts, the mystery, the personal intrigues, psychological torment and power games… layers of cruelty and oppression, and the subversive and hopeful, liberating lesbian love story. Wonderful

Pretty predictable. Hetty’s frustrating inner dialogue got really irritating. I did like some of the descriptions of the house and animals - lots of good details and literary devices.
A pretty atmospheric and competently written novel with compelling characters (so really, the rating is probably just above 3 stars but not quite at 3.5). Unfortunately, I was hoping more gothic elements and also found the story to be dragging at times. Still worth a shot if you enjoy historic settings.
For the benefit of most oomf, yes, there are lesbians in this novel and, yes, none of them die or are horrifically punished by the narrative.
