This book is fine. Jennifer’s Body did it first and did it better.
The first 100 pages are extremely boring, I felt like I was forcing myself to finish this book, some outdated and racist dialogue
sitting “Indian style” and “you’re so skinny you look Ethiopian”, “slave day” for spirit week at school where one student owns another and makes them do whatever they want unless they can bid higher for themselves
(idc if they would have said it in the 80s, leave it out tf), very slow moving plot, no character development, you barely see the demon having a hand in what it’s doing to her friends, the exorcist character is so random and gives me the ick until his epilogue basically, and the main characters saying they love each other by saying “dearly but not queerly”…are you fr? You really reinvented no homo for this book? I’ll watch the movie bc it’s been made but this is book is meh

Of the Hendrix novels I've read so far (Southern Bookclub, Final Girl, Haunted House) this is hands down my favorite one. I devoured this very fun story of an 80s Mean Girls-esque crew that slowly succumbs to a demonic possession. At its core it's a coming of age book so among the demonic encounters and exorcising there's drama and bittersweet reflections of growing up, but nothing ever feels too heavy. If you're looking for something truly scary or horrific, this isn't it although there is some gruesome imagery. But really it's just a thrilling and fairly lighthearted ride with a possessed BFF. Also after reading take a second to appreciate the book cover. The design is easily one of my favorites.

A super fun romp through the 1980s. With a little side of posession.
