A nice, well written book with a romance that starts out happy, then goes sad, and then becomes happy at the end. My main complaints are how the book deals with sensitive topics like depression and anxiety, mentioning them in places where they didn’t contribute anything to the story. It feels like they were randomly put there. Another annoyance is the dialogue, which feels incredibly forced in most places. There is also a sex scene in literally every chapter. Overall, a fun read that did make me laugh a bit, even with some quite big flaws.

Parts of this book are hard to read, particularly if you have any direct or tangential experience with depression. Nonetheless, it all ends up okay and is a tender love story, which makes the difficult bits thoroughly worthwhile. (The easy, rooted perspective of Darian’s glitter pirate helps too.) The insight into the experience of depression and what it takes to re-establish oneself among the living is particularly important to have depicted in literature and I am glad that Hall has done so here.

As a Hall fan who read Boyfriend Material first, I thoroughly enjoyed the annotations to/extras included in this edition. Though they occupy different worlds, it was fun to see thee bits of Luc and Oliver rooted in Glitterland. Definitely a worthwhile read on multiple levels.

At this point, I am willing to try any Alexis Hall title I come across. I have never been disappointed by this author's ability to create real, flawed, and beautiful characters, their ability to inject wit and emotion into their stories, and their ability to make me cry. Glitterland was no expection.

Ash is a bipolar depressive with crippling anxiety. As you might imagine, he's struggling. And a relationship is the last thing he wants. When he goes home with sparkly "glitter pirate" Darian for a hook up, he's frightened by how comfortable he is with sweet but odd pirate annnnd he sneaks out before morning.

But he can't keep Darian out of his mind, or out of his life.

This book had me ugly crying, not just from some beautiful scenes, but from the poetic but painfully accurate descriptions of living with chronic anxiety and depression.

100% worth the read.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
