2.5. okay this had ALOT OF potential; however, the big reveal and finale fell flat. the saving grace for this read was the lil bit of unease felt while reading it which made it “spookier”

Let me start by saying, I don’t think this is a horror book and I don’t think this book has been marketed correctly. It is a coming of age with some thriller elements. And in that genre it’s pretty darn successful. But I didn’t go into this book with the correct expectations and that affected my experience/my rating. I’ve watched vintage horror and while the main character may enjoy older horror films, this book does not read as an homage or pastiche.

That was really, really lovely. Well-written and haunting, incredibly introspective with often painfully relatable nuances to the characters. I loved the classic-horror-movie-esque backdrop that set the stage for a story that was truly about dealing with crippling anxiety, insecurities, and horrible childhood trauma of varying types and degrees. Things weren’t totally black-and-white, but more realistically complex, and it felt like we were continuously diving deeper and deeper into the characters’ psyches, only for beloved and familiar classic slasher-flick tropes to ground us back in the surface of the storytelling once more. I usually don’t like deep, dark introspective pieces like that, but the way this book balanced those two atmospheres kept me reeled in the entire time.
