I feel bad piling on with another 3 star review. I really wanted to like this.

It’s short and quick, and home invasion is one of my favorite horror tropes. And there is at least one part in this book that is genuinely tense.

However.

There are two characters with at least a couple opportunities to use the phone at various parts in the story that just don’t. So it kinda felt dumb in that regard.

Additionally, we are given one of the children’s points of view.

I don’t dislike his POV as a general rule. But reflecting on the story, I cannot tell you why it was included.

This story is also confusingly told out of order? For what feels like no reason at all? So one minute we’re at midnight and it’s scary, and then it flashes back to before midnight, and that’s fine.

But then for some reason we’re treated to a glimpse of breakfast?! And other parts of the night…

I don’t know.. none of it is badly written. I think the author was trying to say something about anxiety and the way it was swept under the rug in the past, which is fine.

It just wasn’t really what I came for…

(I’m sorry!)

Don’t sell me 90s babysitter slasher nostalgia and use it as a platform for something else.

Sometimes all I want is 90s babysitter slashers. lol

Anyway, I would definitely give the author another try in the future. I leave the book with no ill feelings, just that I wanted more from it.

This was a fun enough read, though some of the dialogue felt a little ridiculous and some characters a little cartoonish. Overall though I liked the way ERV chose to write  Ben & Amy’s chapters as moving in opposite directions timewise.
