This book was kinda flat until the very end. Not enough suspense, and there too much character development of side characters for something so short.

This was so disappointing. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style, minus the constant references to horror films and characters and tropes. We get it. Amy loves horror movies. But this much unsubtle referencing was quite annoying.
But the characters were interesting and very real. Yet this was a horror/thriller, and with all the intercut flashbacks and first person narration being focused on feelings versus active experiences, I wasn’t very thrilled.
Don’t get me wrong, a few moments had sprinkles of thrill and the promise of danger.

SPOILER
(like the chapter with mystery visitor. loved that! give me more of that!)
SPOILER END

However, when the book is less than 200 pages long, I shouldn’t still be questioning at page 150 what the danger even is, or wondering if there even is danger at all. And the climax was maybe 10 pages?? Maybe!
Perhaps if I had read this in one sitting I would’ve had a more exciting time, but when what feels like 80% of the book was internal monologue, memory, and earlier-in-the-day flashbacks, it’s easy to check out and come back to this over a few sittings.
I’d be willing to see this author’s psychological or other genre attempts in the future because I did get drawn in by the people and their habits (especially Mira. Love that fucked up little girl!!) but this was not it. At all. And I’m so pissed.
