I love a good mystery, a book that keeps me in suspense and guessing about what is going to happen. Unfortunately I couldn't connect with this one. The characters, while I know I was supposed to empathize with the babysitter Amy, I didn't find engaging. I found myself wanting to finish this book quickly so I could move on to another.
Amy is anxious. That is literally it to her - all you need to know. She and her boyfriend have issues. Her boyfriends family has issues. Amy isn't like other girls, she is obsessed with old slasher films - she sees what others don't. Do you get the picture I'm painting? I just couldn't get into it.
The 2 kids were more entertaining, but I still found them boring. Mira was the older sister who was moody but could be nice to her younger brother. She acted older than she was. Ben was the young little puppy dog kind of little brother, with a weird affection for Amy. They had their moments though, when Mira stood up to their deadbeat dad and hit the bad girl with a bat. I was impressed.
But, like I said in the beginning, this book unfortunately didn't do it for me. I have read other thrillers that have kept me nervous while reading.

Enjoyed reading this slice of life thriller
At least that’s how I would describe it
The main character Amy is fully fleshed and I enjoyed seeing the story from her perspective, followed up with chapters from the perspective of the child she is babysitting
Loved all the nods to horror movies.
My only complaint is I wish the novel had kept going and given us something after the events of the night
Lots of thoughts of how Amy would struggle with the trauma of what occurred as well as her relationships with her friends/family
Maybe we can get a sequel with Tess seeking revenge for her sister

A huge thank you to the author, NetGalley, and Harper Perennial for providing this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A fun homage to 90s slasher movies where you think you know the ending - until it happens.
This book was a fun and quick read, and the entire time reading it felt like I was relaxing with a Goosebumps paperback while a classic babysitter slasher movie is playing in the background. In my opinion, a large portion of this book is to be enjoyed with Vibes, and Vibes only.
Told with multiple POVs and a mixed timeline, we slowly see how all the pieces on this chessboard come together for this one fateful night. This book starts off with the crescendo of the night, which occurs at midnight, and we then skip around throughout the day of all the events that happened before this. We also get glimpses of our babysitter when she was still a child, and had her own babysitter, and we can see how our main character grew up into the teenager she is today.
If you want to curl up and relax for a bit with something that feels like watching a classic slasher movie, or playing Puppet Combo’s “Babysitter Bloodbath,” then this is the book for you.

This book has gotten bad ratings, but I am glad I listened to the one review that explained how good it is and that it's just described poorly. The actual "action" in the book is limited, most of the plot progresses in the character's heads. But the twist was so good! I was totally not expecting it and was not sure where the story was headed. The book had a few well-written red herrings in place.
The nostalgia for old horror movies reminded me of Grady Hendrix.
And I'm not Jewish but I absolutely loved the small details of Jewish life added in. *spoiler* I love that the "magic" mezuzah saved them.
