After reading this book and the reviews on this book, I think it fell victim to incorrect marketing copy. This is not a thriller or a horror.
It is a quietly suspenseful novel that takes place over one night—in the style of the classic babysitter horror trope—but the rest of the book is quite introspective. It also has some of the best representation of different forms of anxiety I’ve ever read in fiction, with young characters trying to make sense of their fears and how to cope.
Again, don’t go in expecting big reveals and fast-paced twists, but if you set your expectations for a back-and-forth timeline of one night and a look inside many young characters’ heads, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
