this is Ready Player One but for horror references, and those references are a thousand times more clunky and awkward than the ones in RPO, if you can believe it. i’d forgive them if there was an actual interesting or good story to go along with them but nope
i don’t often feel like a book was a waste of my time but sheesh, this one was

As someone who also has an anxiety disorder who feels calmer when watching horror movies, I felt so seen in Midnight on Beacon Street. Verona does an amazing job describing panic attacks and general anxiety that never goes away and effects every aspect of life. It was the best part of this book.
That said, I wasn't a fan of the style of Midnight on Beacon Street. The timeline jumping got frustrating for me and the lead up to who the killer is, complete with a few red herrings, felt more frustrating than anticipatory.
In the end, it was a good slasher, just not the style that I enjoy.
I do recommend other slasher fans, and fans of slow/quiet thrillers like the work of Gillian Flynn, read it however because it is well thought out and well written with a fantastic Final Girl in Amy.

Love the 90’s setting and references, characters are great, only things that kept my rating from being higher was that the twist was pretty telegraphed, and there was not much of an explanation behind why the culprit acted the way they did. In the end I still enjoyed this book, but was left wanting a little more.
