this book pleasantly surprised me. I was absolutely taken with how everything was wrapped up in the end. the ambiguous conclusion was truly the only way to end this story. anything else would have been a disservice

I felt like I was watching a Wong Kar Wai movie while reading this. The mood draws you into the story, instead of the plot. It’s hard to put it down.

P.S. Go on Spotify to find the jazz playlist that shares the same title as this book and read it while listening. Tracks mentioned into the book are in the playlist. Thank you to whoever that created it!

Nostalgia is one of Japans biggest exports.

Hajime, an only child, pampered, impatient and quick to move on leaves a string of affairs behind. He is affected by the loneliness it brings to his life, and he considers himself responsible. But he shackled by his own nature. A lot of years, a marriage and a child later, he meets Shimamoto by sheer luck. She is the same girl whose heart he broke by sleeping with her cousin. But as she breezes into his life, she brings in mysterious circumstances.

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and the portrayal of needs- physical and emotional, but this short tale left a lot of questions at its wake. I found this book extremely unsatisfactory and I have been looking for all these answers will never get.
Not the best Murakami out there, I guess.

This was my first Murakami book, and I didn't expect how casual the language would be at times. The writing at first appeared almost "amateurish," but as I let it sit and took in the message, I gained an appreciation for how it often captures the emotion of the situation really well.

The character does not do himself any favors to be likeable, but I think he embodies core feelings and sentiments that most people can relate to - excessive reminiscing and romanticizing of the past, feeling a lack of control in one's life as they age, and failing to live in the moment and appreciating what one has right in front of them.

A guy messes around and loses control but regains it.
