“Sometimes when I look at you, I feel I’m gazing at a distant star,” I said. “It’s dazzling, but the light is from tens of thousands of years ago. Maybe the star doesn’t even exist anymore. Yet sometimes that light seems more real to me than anything.”
Compared to other Murakami production this was a total disappointment.

(2,5) As promising as this sounded at first, South of the Border, West of the Sun fizzled out and became a real disappointment. The first half of this book really hooked me, with a tender teenage romance between outcasts, a disappearing woman (a typical Murakami trait of course), and the main character turning into a jazz bar owner, but somewhere after the midway point, things got fuzzier and fuzzier. Its climactic moments were anything but climactic, only leaving more answers and unsatisfactory feelings in the end. On top of that, one of those climactic scenes was the most ridiculous Murakami sex scenes I think I've ever read. On top of that, South of the Border might have the earliest description of underage breasts that I've ever encountered in a Murakami novel - a truly dubious feat that I think occurred only 5 pages into the book. But worst of all: the main character in this was the most unlikable person I've ever seen in a Murakami novel. Besides cheating on almost every woman he meets, he keeps demanding some sort of pity from the reader which, in my opinion, he never earns, not even in the book's final pages which aim for some sort of redemption. In the end, I got surprisingly little from this book where even my favorite of Murakami's traits couldn't really charm me. Really hoping to have better luck with my next foray into his work.
