It’s definitely partly nostalgia but this book is SO charming. It’s so Australian and the teenagers are written incredibly realistically. I loved this series when I was like 12-13 and honestly, even though it’s obviously not for my demographic now I still really enjoyed reading it.

I loved seeing 90’s Aus and enjoyed the thought experiment of the invasion, but some plot choices were very unrealistic, the “male author writing a female teen” failed at key points, and it was too serious by half with its theme of budding teen sexuality (giving off 80-90s teen lit fic / “very special episode” sitcom vibes)

Vissa författare skriver ungdomar på ett orealistiskt sätt, och så är denna bok. Även om det är en extraordinär situation stör språket och gör att hela förloppet blir orealistiskt. Men ett intressant tankeexperiment som är relevant i dagens samhälle.

Wanted to love this book but it didn't blow me away

As a teenager I’ve read this series multiple times and reading them 15 years later I can see why. These books are written with such ease! Even though I’m a lot older now, I still understand these kids, and I’m invested in their lives and adventures. You feel a thrill when they are on the move and empathy for them as they deal with the aftermath in their hideout called Hell.

Reading this you’ll be rooting for them the whole time, and feel a certain pride with their accomplishments.

The story is narrated by Ellie, who was elected by the group to keep a record of the events that happened. This results in a sort of diary-style writing. It made the start of the book rather slow, because Ellie starts with introducing all her friends and she takes her time to write how they convinced their parents to go on this camping trip. I would not have mind if the story started at the point where they would come back from the bush and find their homes deserted, because that's when the book starts to become interesting. They find out that Australia has been invaded by a foreign country and that their families have been taken captive. Ellie and her friends decide to hide from the enemy and return to their camping spot hidden in the bush where they start to make plans to sabotage the enemy and to prepare their guerilla actions.

Ellie and her friends are normal teenagers with normal teenage problems and Ellie describes her friendships and the romances that are blossoming between some of them. I did not really care for these parts because I found them rather high-school-ish. At some points Ellie even annoyed me because of her selfishness and drama.

The action scenes on the other hand are pretty amazing and suspenseful. The guerilla actions are dangerous, but (relatively) realistic and not without casualties. And as annoying Ellie can be, she is pretty fierce when it comes to fighting the enemy.

Although the book started out slow and Ellie annoyed me at times, there is lots of action towards the end and the book ended with such a cliff hanger that I could not wait to read the second book in the series. The second book has absolutely no pace issues and I loved it so much more than this one, so if you decide to pick up this book be prepared to read the full series. With the current flood of YA dystopia books out there, this series is definitely recommended as it's unique in its setting and story.
