This was my first time reading this book and I can’t believe - as a rural Aussie teen myself (or at least I was when this was ciruculating my school) - that I had never picked it up before now. I would this book incredibly subtle yet powerful in its intertextuality and incorporation of Australian culture. Although I did find it kind of slow in some parts, the story overall was still carried at a gripping pace as to not get bored and DNF.
I did have prior knowledge and familiarity of the story before starting though that in no way lessened my enjoyment. Over all, this novel remains a staple in Aussie teen culture to this day.

I’ve always enjoyed the movie for this one, and I thought the book it was based on was really good too! An interesting and exciting story, though missing some originality. It meanders some in the middle, which I think the movie wisely trimmed down on. But overall one I’m excited to continue the series for! Overall a 7/10
This series deserves to be a LOT more well-known than it is! Somewhere in the nexus of historical fiction/sf/post apocalyptic/ya/adventure, this story is grand and scary and exciting while still feeling grittily real. A good feel for teenage interactions and the sometimes nebulous thinking involved.

I read this in high school but wanted to revisit. It’s honestly such a bop. Aussie teens are FERAL, maybe all us aussies have this innate ability to absolutely crush in an unexpected ww3 situation. Robyn is my favourite character and an absolute weapon. Ellie quite the automotive queen though, go off girlllll. I don’t really want to read the rest of them but this was a blast…
John Marsden has treated this disturbingly realistic scenario with respect, and the book is very well written. After I finished, I was so happy to find out there are 6 more books to go!
Not my favourite book in the series, though really quite necessary to get the back story of the characters so that you are able to understand what is going on and why certain decisions are made in later books.
