Spice Rating: 5 out of 5 ==> this book is not for those that need a clean romance.  Be Warned.

This is the first book in the Wild Hunt Series by Cherise Sinclair.  I absolutely love this author, so when I discovered she also wrote a paranormal romance, I will all in.  However, as much as I love the series as a whole, there were a few things that fell short with the first book.  (still worth the read though.... I have read this book at least 3-times).

The story follows a bad-ass covert marine named Victoria who helps a young boy in the beginning of the book.  She is then tasked with finding the shifters and informing his grandfather of what happened to him.  Victoria has to put her covert skills to its biggest test and try to find the shifters the quietist way possible without (1) revealing it to humans that shifters exist and (2) figuring out who the shifters are before they find her......the only thing is, the humans who kidnapped her to begin with are searching for her as well.  This story takes on many twists and turns and Victoria's life is at risk when she meets the Cosantir of the territory and his brother, a cahir (warrior) named Alec.

Character Strength - one of the positive things about the female lead is she is literally a bad-ass.  She is a covert Marine through and through and doesn't care if her insolence to a higher authority among the shifters gets her killed.  It is interesting to see her interaction with the shifters and with her human superiors separately .... and how she navigates each conversation and interaction.

World Building - The author does a great job at building this world and placing a human smack-dab in the middle of it.  There were no questions on the shifter laws, traditions,  or why they govern the people the way they do --- which I appreciated.  Having a great baseline on the world in the first book is SUCH a benefit when going to the next books as the ground work has already been set and the author can then focus on the story development.

Character Development -- The only character you see changing in the story (like truly changing) is Victoria..... because she is a single woman who is also a marine.  So, as she falls for the shifters, she has to learn that being alone, self sufficient, or always in control isn't her only path.  Calum and Alec don't grow or develop at all - they remain as they are from the beginning.  However, this does not impact the story in any negative manner.  It was actually pleasant ........

"At this point...........,"  he murmured.  "You do not command.  You may beg, if you feel the need"

HOLY SMOKES!!

My only complaints for the first book was:

Depth -- the depth of the characters and back stories are severely lacking.  From what I recall, nothing was revealed about Calum or Alec's past.... which left a lot of questions I wished I could have had answered:  When did Calum become a Cosantir?  How did it happen?  What was the back story on his little girl Jamie?  What about Alec, what is his story?  How does one go about to become "God-Chosen" for the duties or talents they have?

Story Chopy-ness -- At times, I felt the story was not as smooth as it could have been in places .  The only way I can describe it is....  it seemed there were small (VERY small) chunks missing where a little more detail or time taken could have smoothed things out and made it easier to read.  However, this same thing happened with her first book for the Masters of the Shadowlands series....... while the rest of the books in the series (just like the Shadowlands) were immaculately done and immensely enjoyable.  I think the author may be overly focused on the world-building in the first book and overlooked some of those little details.

All in All...... this is an AMAZING STORY and a great springboard to launch her shifter series.  Well worth the read and a series I would pay money to purchase over and over again.

I got this book for free on IBooks, and it was surprisingly an enjoyable light read that mixed fantasy with romance.
