Eh. The book is ok. It reads fast, but though there is supposed to be growth in the main character, Everly, it feels surface-level at best. Also, towards the end, while giving a presentation at the opening of the exhibit she has curated, Everly tells the audience that, at the end of the Civil War, Lee surrendered to Sherman. Lee surrendered to Grant. It’s a ridiculous mistake.

I loved learning about this piece of history and I enjoyed the historical context. I didn't enjoy the modern storytelling. I found it cheesy and predictable.

I very much enjoyed the story, the dual narrative, and the history! I had never heard of this ship or its tragedy, and the author brought it to life in truly engaging fashion. I appreciated her attention to the many dualities of survival.
As an aside, I want to learn more about the Pulaski!

Three stars because the historical portions of this book were very interesting, although they were drawn out longer than they needed to be. But the contemporary protagonist and her issues made this book so overwrought. As I got further through the book I found myself skimming more and more during the contemporary parts of the book.
This historical novel based on a horrible event is gripping and rewarding. The author enriches the intimacy of the tale told in two timelines with beautifully fleshed out characters but I gave it only three stars because the extensive descriptions, particularly of the women's garments in the 1838 sector, often impede the movement of the story. When I began it, if it had not been for the number of positive reviews, I would have dismissed it as just another bodice-ripper.
Loved the way the two stories - present and past - intertwined and begs the question How do the survivors survive? How do the living go on living? Learned a lot about The Titanic of the South. Looking forward to my next trip to Savannah to see the memorial.
