It's a bit bittersweet reading this delightful book about amazing wonderful good-hearted police alongside what we know is the actual state of our current police force: full of cowardness, cruelty, and racism. But it's hard not to adore Carrot and Vimes as characters and watch both idealism and cynicism work in magical harmony. And, of course, it has Vimes' "boots theory of socioeconomic unfairness" which is one of the greatest quotable moments in the series so far.
The writing is incredible, the characters engaging, the plot is, actually, fairly secondary all things considered - but absolutely a book worth your time.
