This is the first volume of the new Young Avengers series, and it collects issues #1 to #5, and it is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. PERFECT. I WILL PUNCH ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE.

Kidding. But it’s really, really good.

I believe this begins just after Children’s Crusade, as Billy mentions how all of them swore not to be superheroes anymore (except for Tommy, but he’s something else entirely). Billy and Teddy have a small quarrel and, to cut a long story short, Billy carries on his long history of messing things up and does something stupid (but out of the love in his heart) that establishes the main plot arc for the next 15 issues. THANK YOU BILLY.

The art is wonderful, the colours, shadow and facial expressions are honestly so amazing I can’t fully express how amazing they are. The humour is incredible- a common trait in all stories I’ve read featuring the Young Avengers- and I found myself receiving weird looks from my mum whenever I busted out laughing. Which was really every couple of panels. New characters are introduced alongside the usual ones (i.e. Eli is gone, but Noh-Varr joins), creating a new team of Young Avengers, who are extremely badass and all attractive. I’m not even kidding.

I think what really got me with this volume was America’s ability to pick a fight with literally anybody- including the God of Mischief- and then serve their ass to them on a platter afterwards. Kid Loki is basically a sassy little shit with a penchant for fucking up everything he gets his hands on, so it makes sense that him and America have a tense relationship. I’m very fond of him and America being... Frenemies? I don’t even know if I can call it that, considering she beats the shit out of him every chance she gets and doesn’t really show any positive emotion towards him most of the time.

This volume also includes one of my favourite double page spreads ever, of all time- it’s in the second issue, and I think if you’ve read this, you know what double page I’m talking about. There’s also a double page in issue four with Noh-Varr, and it’s VERY impressive. And it made me laugh.

Overall this is a very impressive first volume, and I’d highly recommend it, to people who are familiar with the old Young Avengers arc, and people who aren’t. Although it is nice to recognise past references and understand what’s going on.

gays and badass ladies, i’m in

i am... confused

So fun, catches you in right away, and just overall a pretty rad read!

I'm not well-versed in Marvel comics, nor have I read the prequel to this, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

title unintentionally correct, imo. except that i don't like the art style either, whoops. i know that this is only the first part of an establishing new canon for YA, but i... wasn't interested in reading the rest. i can't quite put my finger on what it lacked compared to the old series, but it lacked it.

THIS WAS AMAZING I'M GOING TO READ THE REST OF THEM

I would for Kate Bishop and America Chavez. Needs more Tommy tho. Send tweet.
