The information in this book was indeed interesting but that intrigue was completely soured by the disregard shown to native peoples in nearly every regard throughout the book. Further more the author does an enormous disservice to his audience by not addressing the negative effects of these drugs as well as their useful ones. The book is blatantly the product of a middle class white man with no experience or nuance for talking about the ways poverty, culture and medicine intersect in the context of drugs, addiction and self-medication. The man nether knew nor cared to truly listen to  experiences different from his own and those of others of similar class and privilege.

Not a strictly scientific book but fascinating none the less. A blend of science, history, politics, and personal experience comes together in this book. Follow Pollan on a journey through uppers, downers, and “outers”!

Wishing for the confidence of this author! 😅

I took unnecessary exception to the author's claim of giving up caffeine cold-turkey, while apparently drinking decaf. 🥴

I just think there must better content out there than these three self- case studies? However, not so terrible that I didn't finish it, despite that the final chapter didn't sit well with me; in one breath the author talked about the sensitivity of writing about Indigenous medicine and in the next seemingly ignored caution.

The book overall is fascinating and well researched. Some oats became somewhat dry but otherwise I really enjoyed reading it
