I’ve read enough Elizabeth Peters to know that she can “do no wrong” for my literary tastes.

This is just a little faux-gothic romp. And I enjoyed it like a refreshing sorbet after a meal.

A romp of a tale aside, her ability to quick delve into believable characters is excellent. Coupled with her ability to showcase what a character thinks about themselves, juxtaposed with what the other characters think about her/him - brilliant.

I want an Aunt Kate.

3.5- Was super concerned at first, I hated HATED Henry by the middle of page 2. Thank god he was not in most of the book and hated by many other characters. This made the rest of the book quite entertaining. Loved all of the animals.

I adore this book! It's laugh-out-loud funny, extremely charming and even rather spooky. I'm not sure whether this or the Camelot Caper is my favourite Elizabeth Peters, but it's one or the other, for sure.

Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels is a renowned author. I have a preference for her Vicky Bliss mystery series rather than her Amelia Peabody series. I think this is my first foray into any other book written by her. I feel like I will be looking for more of her Gothic stories in the near future.
This is definitely Gothic in feel. Atmospheric huge old bundle of a house, young woman left in charge and all alone, scary things going bump in the night, arrogant fiancé, lovely ornery man to the sort of rescue....all the hallmarks....it could have been trite, but it worked and I liked it. Definitely old-fashioned, but it could easily be brought up to date if someone felt a need. It doesn't need, in my opinion.
Humor, the young lady can pretty much take care of herself but accepts help when needed.
I enjoyed this one and can recommend it.

Lots of fun trying to figure this one out. Despite some very 70s references, I love how enduring Peters' writing is, both the mysterious and comedic sides.

Some hints of elements of witchcraft.

Fun Elizabeth Peters story with ghosts and mystery.
Bit of a victim of it's time, no cell phones or Internet.

Not great literature, but en incredibly fun light read, especially with all the animals and their antics. It's obvious, even if you didn't already know it, that this author is an animal lover.
