I thought this would be moderate fanfare at best but The Secret History of Twin Peaks is a perfect companion to the series. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who hasn’t watched the series and enjoyed it, but for those who did this book adds great background and is thoroughly entertaining. The best part is that the book included so much US History (though much speculative) was quite fascinating, and connected it all to Twin Peaks in a way that felt natural.
This is such a fascinating addition to Twin Peaks, glad I finally watched it and I’m curious how it’ll affect my interpretation of The Return on a rewatch! Very fun format!

This was a really cool book. Finding out who the Archivist was ended up fully blowing my mind by the end of the novel. All the tidbits about the town and residents just made me want to re-watch the show, which I currently restarted now. If you like the mystery of the show I recommend this book.
But more like 2.5 stars, 2 stars just felt mean. First of all, I’m a massive Twin Peaks fan. I tried reading this book when it first came out, and now that I’ve embarked on a rewatch, I told myself I’d read it all. I stopped the first time because my eyes glazed at the Roswell lore. I had totally botched expectations— didn’t realize this was much more about the landscape of conspiracy theories than it was specifically about my favorite Twin Peaks characters. It SOUNDS like something I’d think was pretty cool, but I guess I just do not care about… what would you call it? Alternate-universe history? If I want to know more about Alister Crowley and Nixon’s corruption, I’d read about that at a different time. I wanted to dig very specifically into the Lynch universe. Well, at least finishing this book is finally off my mind.

I think I enjoyed this slightly more than I did last time I read it - but maybe that's because this time I knew what I was getting into, and set my expectations accordingly.
It does of course feel like a tone shift from the TV show, as we are very quickly talking indepth about UFOs and secret government conspiracies. A slight detour in the middle to just talk about the history of Twin Peaks characters, and then back to UFOs.
But for what it is, I would say the information is actually quite intriguing and interesting, and it's well put together for the most part (maybe aside from the jarring tone shift).
