Firstly, I’m gonna say Shadow and Bone was infinitely better than this book. The only exciting parts were at the beginning and very end which is why it took me SO LONG to get through the middle. Nothing happened for over 100 pages however one part towards the end kept me on the edge of my seat. If it weren’t for Nikolai I would not have been able to get through this book. Hoping the third one makes up for it.

While the first book of the trilogy set up the universe Siege and Storm upped the anti and took no prisoners. There is a lot of death, shifting alliances, and revealing of untruths between moments of hope.

If the first book was about Alina figuring out who she was then this volume was about her struggle to accept/follow through with her destiny. More players are added to the board and bring with with them their own complications as Alina tries to figure out how to save Ravka.

One of my favorite things is that
despite Nikolai entering in the picture it never falls into the girl caught between two love interest tropes. Alina is very clear with where her regard lies, even if she has to consider other options.

I didn’t set my expectations very high for this middle child of Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy, because so many people seemed to agree that it’s the worst of the three. Maybe that helped, but I liked it nearly as well as the first book, and probably more than the series’ conclusion, Ruin and Rising (review to come). I had the same complaint with this book as I did with the first: everything felt a little rushed, which took away from the emotional and dramatic impact of the events. I do have to agree with most fans that the introduction of the new characters—namely Nikolai, Tolya, and Tamar—was a great improvement. Nikolai in particular is such a fun character, and I love the attitude and humor he brought to the story (God knows Alina and Mal need it).

Happy ending meter (no specific spoilers, just the vibe of the ending): Cliffhanger-y again, which is to be expected from the second book in a trilogy.
