Young Avengers, Volume 1: Style > Substance by Kieron Gillen

This new direction for the writing/art/characters is definitely not for me. I know I've missed quite a lot of the plotlines that occurred between The Children's Crusade and Style > Substance, but this just felt like too much of a departure from the Allan Heinberg/Jim Cheung combo that I had started to grow so fond of. The art shows a very competent hand, but the flatness of the colours and the lack of interesting backgrounds/lighting left me feeling bored. This volume was a struggle to get through overall, and I don't think I'll be reading any further.

Let's break this down a bit:
*The Characters! I really liked this team together, and I feel a good dynamic starting between them all. I'm not 100% sure how Kate ended up in space with Noh-Varr, or really why they're together, BUT I like the characters nonetheless. I'm especially invested in seeing more Wiccan and Hulkling's relationship develop, plus anything with Kate promises to be fun. <3
*The Art (mostly)-I think the character design was solid, and the colors were working, but the backgrounds, interior settings, AND outdoor scenes felt weirdly empty, almost like this was taking place on an unfinished film set. I just wasn't feeling the vibes these parts gave off.
*The Plot: It's interesting but slightly disjointed. The Kate & Noh-Varr opening in space gives way to Billy and Teddy drama, which is where the freaky morphy aliens come in, and then America and Loki are going at it...I just felt a little whipped around and wasn't totally sure what was important. I think this will smooth over in later issues now that the plot has been set, so fingers crossed on that.
*The Spell? Okay, the ending (no spoilers) with the spell and having to stay away has got me ??? I think I understand it but tbh I'm not sure. It seemed a little vague.
*The Emotions! Loki is obvi going through it with his past self, Billy and Teddy are holding strong through all the turmoil, and I sense some other things bubbling. Despite the bumps of this issue, the emotions coming through were there and I FELT for this gang! The emotional aspects have hooked me and yanked me right into the world of the Young Avengers.

Love me a Gillen-McKelvie joint! Does sort of throw you in a tad unprepared if you haven’t read the Young Avengers series that came before this one but you catch on pretty quick.

I never read the original run of Young Avengers so I was hesitant to pick this one up but I finally gave it a go and it didn’t disappoint!

Now I’m suddenly invested in a bunch of characters I never thought I would enjoy. Dang it.

I love them so much. The I’ve been looking forward to a young Avengers live action team up so I decided to get the comics a shot. Ugh I love Marvel Boy and Miss America so much. The team was funny and it did have some moments that made me shocked. I had Hulkings “mom” so much

There's a mature and sexy aspect for these heroes now they're in the legal age. Billy and Teddy are much more intimate in their relationship; Kate had a one-night stand with Noh-Varr; Kid Loki using the love card. The conflict of needing to get away from parents (to save everyone) is a nice setup for galactic travel and I'm interested on where this will lead them to. I'm liking the character of Kid Loki being naughty and would like to see how he'll manage to overcome that second voice of his past self. Noh-Varr is so sexy in rival with Billy these people could make a more mature storyline. It's just crazy the guys look like Bieber don't know if this is a conscious choice. Anyway, this is the first time I'll read about America Chavez I want more of her and her motivations especially with keeping watch of Kid Loki. And with Kate, I know she could step up and be the leader she deserves.
