Wow what a book. Crazy to think about RJs life story and the sacrifice he made. Love how you get perspective from several different characters. the kidnapping of Sonny didn't make much sense to move the story I would have been fine with a shorter story with this not included
Age of Vice is so good. The narration switches among protagonists of different backgrounds and it becomes clear that the story changes based on privilege, class, and community. The first narrator is poor and we see the characters he serves as a driver and butler of sorts through his eyes and it’s unclear what’s going on.
The narration then switches to the wealthy protagonists and we understand much more. The book feels unfinished because it is - supposedly it’s the first of a trilogy. Still, Deepti Kapoor’s evisceration of societal structures is welcome and I look forward to more. Definitely worth the read!

what the shit??
I really enjoyed this. This view of India was enthralling and addictive. This is essentially about India’s class struggle and India’s path to power or progress. I really enjoyed reading all the different perspectives in this book. I found myself rooting for Sunny despite hating him. There was a point in the book where the sins of the father passed on to the son, and I think it was done so well. Sunny’s descent is extremely interesting. I feel like it represents how no matter what good intentions the ultra wealthy have, they end up doing damage. Neda was also extremely interesting. She is the perfect symbol for the complicit wealthy middle class of India.
And Ajay… He is poor, he is traumatized, and he is taken advantage of too freaking much. If any of these characters are good and deserving of happiness, it is Ajay.
I will say that the writing has a lot of boring parts, especially towards the end. There is not really a plot structure to this book. The time skips and perspective changes are a very slow build with an unclear destination. But the ending was exactly what this type of book needed (spoiler alert: everyone is fucked and no one is happy).
Another thing I enjoyed was the criticism of the western world’s views on India.
Overall, I think this book is a great criticism of India’s upper class. It makes me want to learn more, and it was a compelling read. I would definitely recommend this (especially to white people obsessed with “developing” countries). Ughhh i could write a whole lit analysis on this book. There are so many idea subtly explored about gender, class, race, caste and so on. This should be taught in schools.

I liked it a lot, but felt off about the ending. I'm one of those readers that puts a lot of emphasis on endings, and this just didn't do it for me. That being said, the story is fascinating, and I'd be interested in reading more from the author.
Should not have finished
548 pages later of wasted time. This book took me forever to get into and forever to finish. There was truly no point to it. The book followed the story of three different people and it all led up to one big pointless event. This book also should have come with a million trigger warnings. Dying babies. Drug use. Sexual assault. Extreme violence. In addition, littered throughout this book are words, terms, and phrases in Hindi that are not explained to you so you just have to put context clues together. Truly awful and would not recommend.
