A funny little book by a very sassy author who does not attempt to be shy about her opinions!
Also, a lovely memento from my time in Bath.

Absolutely hilarious. You can hear the teenage voice just dripping with sarcasm and eye rolls. I immediately understood why it was published. It's only 22 pages long and worth being on your shelves, especially if you love English history.

Jane Austen is a favorite of mine so I was excited for this find at the library book sale. Her understanding and formulation of opinions (often really amusing) on the history of England at such a young age was impressive, but to that end, the editor does include notes to clarify or (in only a few cases) correct the content of the writings just in case you need more context or are left thinking "that doesn't sound right....". Loved the inclusion of some of Jane's surviving letters at the end too!!

It was fun, but 1) how dare the narrator dishonor Elizabeth in such a way! and 2) it's been a bit too long since my last *actual* History of England class, so some of the jokes and winks and nudges whistled away above my head while I tried frantically to remember what was really going on.

Austen had wit even at age 16. From the first page she declares herself a “partial, prejudiced, & ignorant Historian.” Then follows a parody of any historical account of thirteen British monarchs that Jane and every other school goer had to learn. She paints everyone mischievously and inaccurately but it's much more entertaining than any history book. If I were more aware of the history of some of the monarchy from that time, I would like it even more.

I saw this book featured in the 1999 version of Mansfield Park. It was really coincidental since I had just read this book before seeing the movie.
