This book was gorgeously written, some of the most beautiful and unique writing I’ve experienced in a long time. The plot and its mystery was perfectly paced with twists that creatively put so much doubt in my mind as I read. Courtroom thrillers are very hit or miss for me, and this one was amazing.
It was heartbreaking and gritty, but all the better for it because it was honest and real about things that so many people avoid thinking about. It highlighted many different experiences, hardships, societal hypocrisies… all without making it feel too overwhelming or preachy. Absolutely loved this one, it fascinated me and stimulated my mind from beginning to end!

This was so good! All the characters felt so real and flawed. I was really interested in each of them and what drove them to do some terrible things.

I listened to the 14 hour audiobook of this over three days when I had a concussion and it was my most recently downloaded audiobook from the library. I’m forever looking for good mysteries by women of color that don’t glorify cops, and intertwine some interesting social issues. From glancing at reviews of this, it seemed to fit. And it was very well written, well paced and planned, thoughtful and complex legal drama with themes about family and immigration. But oh, the ableism. The disabled children used as props, non-characters, portrayed only as burdens to their parents that drove the broader plot. I kept waiting for some of the main characters’ consuming need to “cure” their children’s autism to be challenged or debunked, but it never was. Also, there was a horrifying sexual assault of a young teenager that was told first and mostly from the perpetrator’s point of view – the perpetrator who is portrayed as generally sympathetic up until that point. He never got what was coming to him, and it seemed like that was a thread so easily let go by the author. It’s disappointing to read such a well written book that could have been so good, so satisfying, beautiful and redemptive, but instead was so dragged down by the author’s unexamined biases.

Really enjoyed this book. A story of many human mistakes woven into how bad things could happen.
