This book was so melodramatic. I went in expecting a romcom, and while there were moments of comedic relief, the overall story was a bit pretentious and felt like I was reading a less glamorous version of an episode of gossip girl. The main characters fall in love one summer abroad but their relationship struggles due to class divide and family expectations. A few years later, they reconnect on the way to a friend’s wedding when the MMC breaks down and has to road-trip to Scotland with the FMC. I liked the alternating timelines between past and present as it kept the reader engaged with the main characters’s love story, but when the reason for their original break up was revealed, I was over it. I did not think what the MMC did was easily forgivable despite his mental health struggle and honestly felt that the main couple should just stay broken up.

what a nice book that i will never read again. did everyone try the chicken? i thought the chicken was lovely. (marcus fucking sucks. he just does. i would refuse to forgive him, and i wouldn’t date anyone who couldn’t bear to cut him off … yes, i still have grudges against people who wronged me in middle school, why?)

Gripping, really well written, clever story with three dimensional characters and relationships I was genuinely invested in.

I listened to the audiobook version of this text and really enjoyed it–mostly, because Josh Dylan was narrating Dylan's chapters.
The plot and characters were very well-written (and cast well in the audiobook) and I think the whole story worked very well as audio due to the roadtrip plot. The text dealt with various issues and themes in a good, and informative, way and with various perspectives.
Overall, I enjoyed the experience of listening to this book and would recommend. It's a typical O'Leary text (emotional, sexy, tense, mysterious) but, I do have to admit that it fell a bit short after reading 'The Flatshare' as I didn't love Addie and Dylan as much as I loved Leon and Tiffy.
