Not really a history for the casual reader. The book focuses heavily on theory, archeology principles, and academics. Very little time is spent on the actual history of the San Franciscan waterfront, which was what I was more hungry for. So much history about the gold rush, the shady characters running around, and so forth was summarized when that’s, honestly, the most interesting part!

If you’re a casual reader, I would focus on some of the middle chapters and skip over the theorizing.
