The kink is very good, but it doesn't make up for the godawful story and flat characters. It's not boring, it's just unironically absurd. A solidly okay book.

To paraphrase Tyra Banks “It’s so bad I want to give you a zero. But that’s not possible, so I give you a 0.25.”

TW/CW: stalking, murder, blood, violence, mentions of sacrifices, cults, SA, human trafficking, kidnapping, dub-con, mentions of p+do rings, mentions of secret government society's/cults/clubs, knife play, gun play, torture,

ABOUT:

Adeline inherits her family home and moves in despite her mother hating the idea. It is the house her great-grandmother was murdered in. She discovers her great-grandmothers journals, uncovering a hidden affair between her and a nameless stalker. And history is repeating itself with Adeline. She has her own stalker. And she can't seem to get rid of him. Or the ghost of her great-grandmother that haunts the halls of the house she once lived in. Battling her stalker and the mystery of the murder Adeline is thrown into a dangerous game of Cat and Mouse.

THOUGHTS:

Whew, where the hell do I begin? Originally, I was avoiding this book as I had no interest in the plot when I first heard of it. However, my sister loves toxic/dark-romances and suggested it. So here I am. In the beginning I wasn't tuned in nor liking the book. Adeline seemed like a bitchy character at first but her personality paired well with Zade. He's not indecisive. He's obsessive. His character is put on a high-pedestal and Zade certainly thinks of himself as a God. Which was kind of cringe in some moments. He's a murderer but he doesn't kill innocent people. He does good things for others, but that doesn't make him a hero, which he is aware of.
Zade and Adeline's relationship is obviously not healthy or normal. Their love surely isn't love. There's really not an explanation on why he "loves" Addie. Feels more like obsessive lust.
The writing isn't terrible. It's good. In some areas the wording doesn't flow well, and I was stuck on the same page until I forced myself to continue on. In the end I did get into it though. Haunting Adeline isn't for everyone, and while I may not like it 100% it is an okay read.

It also ends on a cliffhanger, so I need to know what happens next lmao.

I am ASHAMED to have enjoyed this book as much as I did. I will have to answer for my sins later, but for now I will give you my review of this dark dark dark (did I mention this is very dark) book.

I will not recommend this book openly to anyone. Please please please know what you are getting into. Read the trigger warnings and then read them again. I have not read anything so graphic in the gore and rape as is in this book. It was not the best writing in the world, but it did scratch an itch - that I am very ashamed to have - and I couldn't put it down (unless I couldn't stomach it anymore for the day). The last 10% is very triggering and you should be of sound mind to get through it.

The romance/smut aspect of this book: the smut is very good (oh god I really am going to hell). My dear dear cousin summed it up beautifully, "if you have ever had a rape fantasy, then you will like this book." I feel like that is a great warning for the spice in this book. THE GUN SCENE!!! Don't read or listen to this in public because damn, I thought I had a good smut in public poker face but I was proved so wrong.

Now I have to decide if I will read the next book, not because the story isn't compelling, but because I have to decide if I want to be the person I will be when I am done with it.

Side note: I will not be discussing any of my feeling about this with anyone who has not read the book since they are my only safe space in this category lol

Something inexplicably dark arises in my chest. It’s black and evil and cruel. Dangerous, even.
All I want to do is break her. Shatter her into pieces. And then arrange those pieces to fit against my own. I don’t care if they don’t fit—I’ll fucking make them.

I've heard a lot about this masterpiece. Some love it, some don't. And some can't bcs it was just too dark. I was warned and told to check the tw/cw which I did and it was clear that this would be high on the list of darkest rom books I ever read. This book definitely showed me where my boundaries truly are. This book is dark. It made me question myself multiple times. I learned things about myself idk if I even wanted to know but I do now.

“Zade,” he whispers against my lips. “That’s the only name that will ever leave your lips from now on, especially when you’re making that little pussy feel good. And when I’m making that pussy feel good, then you can call me God.”

It's definitely not for everyone and I can see why many people on booktok said they had to dnf.

“You look beautiful,” I say, cutting off her continued muttering and rendering her silent. Subtly, she glances over her shoulder at me, but doesn’t acknowledge my words.
“So, not only do you only fear me in the daylight, but you only love me when I’m making you come.”
That gets her attention. She whips around, fire in her eyes as she spits, “I don’t love you.”
“Not yet,” I counter, topping it off with a grin. Her eyes narrow into thin slits.

This book doesn't just mention dark topics it goes deeper into the topics than any book I read before. At first I thought this might be a reason for me to dnf but oddly I turned out to like it.

“You can’t escape me, little mouse. I will always find you.”

This book had me in its clutches for a good 3 days and I'm excited to start the second book. I already miss Zady and Addie💕.

Please check out the tw/cw maybe watch a few edits on tiktok to get a feel of what to expect and enjoy 💀✨️
