 Unique, intriguing, quick.

This was a quick audiobook that I listened to in a day. It was a book picked by The Book Bar bookclub located in the Book Centre in Waterford.

I borrowed it from Borrowbox, I'm not sure it would have been a book I would have picked up for myself which is why I love being in a bookclub. I find it can really broaden your reading horizons.

The chapters were nice and short in the book. I think it suited the audiobook format. It was interesting to learn about the lives of the clients. Each chapter could even be taken as a short story in my opinion. It was a 3.5 star read for me.

This is like a piece of social history of a time and a place and a population—middle-aged and elderly people living in a high rise suburb of Berlin in the 21st century. It is charming, moving, neatly crafted, but also feels a bit repetitive when you try to read it through quickly as a novel. I could imagine the short chapters, which each introduce a different character, working better as a series of regular columns in a magazine.

The author Katja Oskamp decides to retrain as a podiatrist after experiencing several changes in her life following her career as a writer. In her book, she describes her encounters with her predominantly elderly clients from the Berlin district of Marzahn and shares stories from their lives. The stories are written light and entertaining, provide insights into the various life paths of her Marzahn clients, and, as the title of the book suggests, it is also a small love letter to Marzahn (a district that is generally not considered one of the most popular or chic areas of Berlin).

This was a quick and easy read, some parts had me awing or laughing aloud, but it wasn't groundbreaking. Did learn more about chiropractory, which was interesting albeit kind of gross haha
