SUCH a fully-developed world full of unique characters with distinct voices. The pace at which she revealed information was always so excellent. I loved piecing together the stories and discovering their connection to each other.

This book took a lot of risks, and it’s one of the most creative books I’ve seen. Stories are told through the long winded sentences of a 13 year old, a spy’s instructional pamphlet, and a series of emails, among other POVs. Even though the storytelling methods change so drastically, the book still feels cohesive and connected. I was completely absorbed and now plan on reading more of Egan’s work.

The sci-fi elements are just a sort of fulcrum—this story is actually a series of short stories, exploring the lives and choices of a series of loosely connected people. And the character lives, also, are not the main point; their stories are so intensely interesting that they feel boring—and unlikely. What really makes it all work is the tremendous writing. The language, the flow, the strange little attempts to make words feel like more than words, which all seem to work pretty well. This book’s plots are mostly whatever, the lives it describes are over-wrought, but it’s a gorgeous book anyway. Recommended.

I really enjoyed this book, it was well written, very entertaining, and had well developed characters. I wish there were fewer characters, and more of a continuation to the characters' stories. What was in the suitcase of that Comstock guy's girlfriend? It got very confusing, trying to remember all the characters. This writer is excellent, but I would like to read a book where she builds in more of a moral or social commentary. The social commentary angle here was lost amongst the music and Hollywood stars, and successful capitalists.

I enjoyed this, always love a web of stories that connects together. I think maybe I would have liked a bit more if there had been one character that was developed more deeply. I did think the symmetry of the starting and ending stories was very pleasing.
