Of Egan’s books I’ve only ever read A Visit from the Goon Squad and that book is 15 years old now. The fact that Candy House follows the same structure makes it feel dated. There are so many characters and not enough time spent with each one, which leaves them feeling simply like tools for progressing the author’s exploration of her theme. I read this book steadily without big breaks and started to lose track of who was who at about 3/4. I get the whole point of the interconnectedness but it doesn’t have to be written so literally. I would have liked a smaller cast of characters with more depth and life written into them.
Brilliant, literary, absorbing. A terrific blend of storytelling and iridescent writing. I will go back now and read A Visit From The Goon Squad, even though I'm reading them in the wrong order. If it is as good as this it will be well worth whatever effort is involved. Very highly recommended.
It was really cool to see the lives of characters from Goon Squad and where they went. I liked the speculative fiction aspect of this book.

This book was unlike any I’ve read before. It was like reading stories within stories that are somehow all connected. I’m excited read more of Jennifer Egan’s work.
