I got this through the Greg Jones Street. It was the first story I tried through the app, and wow.

The narrative is simple enough, which is often the case in short fiction: two brothers on a far-flung colony, New Greenland, sneak out at night to watch the Icewhales breech the methane ocean for a breath. They are the newest kids to the colony, and they go with a group of other children, and the main narrator of the tale, Fletcher, is trying very hard not to feel overshadowed by his younger brother, who has been "modded," which has left him feeling lesser in every way.

The psychology of the kids is spot on, and for a short fiction piece there are more twists than I expected. The ending was as sharp as the title suggests, and I will be looking out for more shorts from Larson.
