The essays in this book were the stars. I will be thinking about the things I learned about Serena Williams in this book for a long time. Some of the video scripts were really difficult to understand without more context. Even after using the Google machine I couldn't identify some of the subjects although it was clear the author was referencing specific events in the media. I didn't care for most of the poetry.

very difficult for me to read and understand. except for the part where she's mad. I totally get that, and can see how a whole people could be perpetually angry at the world, and especially at white people, the race that conquers and abuses.

But the rest of it? nope. i can't get it, poetry or not. or perhaps because of its poetry.
