Quick read. Pleasant enough to read. Felt like a once over lightly with a missed chance to really delve into the characters (who all seem nice enough).

A story I didn't know much about

NYC in the mid-1800's and what to do with poor children is a fascinating topic and one I learned about along with the so called orphan trains.

The story line is intriguing and the characters are lovable. Orphans in the struggling society of New York at the turn of the 20th century were a puzzle that was solved by moving the pieces around. The book did a fair job of depicting historically based details and the characters were relatedly troubled by their lot in life. A few times, the story seemed to jump ahead of itself without much interlude leaving some of the time to the imagination of the reader. A good, quick read with a short, rushed romance at the end of a long challenging journey where the reader feels emotionally invested in the story and the time.
