A solemn and slow-moving tragedy. I can see how The Name of the Wind echoes this story, especially with the frame story of a somber, reflective older man looking back on his life.

I've been recommended this series (and Robin Hobbs generally) so much that I put off reading any of it. I knew that, once started, I'd be struck reading it all, and I was not wrong!

I enjoy slow books when we really get to learn about the characters and world - some are slow but with little information, but this is not that kind of slow. The slow start is actually us witnessing the building of an extremely sturdy foundation, and I cannot fault that!

While there are so many characters introduced, it is done at a trickle rather than bursts, and we get to know them well enough that it was much less trouble to keep track of them than it usually is for me, which I appreciated greatly.
