Sophocles' play follows Elektra, the ill-starred daughter of Trojan hero, Agamemnon and his wife, Klytemnestra. Her life is darkened by greif and rage, and she is held prisoner in her own home, derided and made a slave by her mother. Orestes, her brother has been hiding in exile before he returns to complete the bloody circle of murder and revenge, freeing or forever damning the House of Atreus. The poetry is raw and colloquial, capturing the tension and emotion essential in the cathartic, moralising spectacle that is Greek Theatre.
